Fun facts 911 is an emergency phone number used globally in many North, Central & South America countries. It first began being used by the fire department in the United States in 1957 because it had never been used as an area code. Other regions of the world use different universal emergency phone numbers such as 112 in Europe and 119 in many Asian countries.
