曾在伦敦德国史研究所和弗莱堡大学工作，现为康茨坦茨大学近现代史教授。他出版过大量有关18世纪以来的欧亚历史著作，包括：《世界的演变：19世纪史》（Die Verwandlung der Welt: eine Geschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts）《中国与世界社会》（China und die Weltgesellschaft）；《中国革命：1925年5月30日，上海》（Shanghai, 30. Mai 1925. Die chinesische Revolution）等。
目前，他正在从事20世纪的去殖民化史研究，并和入江昭（Akira Iriye）合作主编《世界史》（A History of the World，6卷本）。
